A similar question, where is your mind?
.
.
.
Your answer…
Was it in your brain or head?
If so, that is a really common answer.
Seems logical.
Yet wrong.
No-one has shown that the mind is in the brain.
There are areas of the brain that are important for memory of course.
But both of these notions neglect something really important.
Your body.
Recent science shows the role of the body in thinking and perception.
The idea of a separate body, brain, mind and the world is now outdated.
Check your experience as a starter.
Separating these in terms of raw experience is difficult.
What you see and feel are being generated by your body systems that are in a particular state (a set of conditions), which is ever-changing.
A complex dynamic.
“…many researchers are exploring views of the predictive brain that allow for the body and the surrounding environment to make robust contributions to the predictive process.”
~ Nave et al.
It is no longer possible to ignore the body state as a significant contributor to thinking and perceiving.
Whilst this undoubtedly takes some work to get one’s head around (because you have been conditioned to think otherwise), when it makes sense, all the possibilities for shaping new and better experiences become available.
You realise your own potential and become the creative architect of your future.
Back to the question of memory.
It turns out that memory is in the body too.
Cells of your body can count, detect patters and store memories.
Check out this work here.
Then consider that you can access memories in your photo albums…old school.
Or your phone as well as conjuring images and thoughts.
Your mind and memory extend.
That’s the notion of the extended mind. More on that soon, and how you can harness it to shape a positive future.
